How do you have made this:

"camera with in-camera motion detection sending alert emails with 5 second video clips to a gmail account "

Thanks.

Just a note -- the mobile version works pretty well for Blackberry users. I check the system at home via my crappy 8310 ("Curve") and it renders pretty well in the standard Crackberry web browser.

Thanks for the info - I'll have to install one of these when I get a house - at least to see who's at the front door.

I'd get a UPS for the computer and wireless router, so they continue to function in the event of a power outage - 30 minutes to an hour would be good.

The only reliance would be on the cable internet to function. Verizon and sprint sell little wireless cards which do internet as well which could make the system totally stand alone - but those things cost $60 a month!

I'm no network expert, but creating a sub network for the security system may increase your personal network traffic if your local camera feeds are too much for your router.

Hi tom, try these settings with your webcam but first open terminal and type
lsusb
look to see if your webcam is there..if not then chances are linux isnt detecting webcam.
If it has been detected (cheese picks it) then its settings like resolution, video4linux, and capture pallet. heres some basic settings i use for MS webcam
source /dev/video0
capture method Video for linux 2 (later versions of zoneminder)
device channel 0
device format secam B (this bit is a key are to fiddle with)
capture pallete YUYV (another fiddly area)
capture width 340
capture height 280

This area was the main area where the wrong setting stops the capture (if the settings are right the "/dev/video0 (1)" text will go either yellow or green.

Hmmz, you know, I've actually never played with using ZoneMinder with locally accessed cameras, though I understand a lot of the software was designed with that in mind before MJPEG network cameras.

I'm willing to bet, however, that there's some sort of permissions issue at play here. If you're running this on OS X, it's probably the case. I know Apple has tightened security on what processes and elevated users are allowed to get camera access, so I wouldn't doubt it's the case. Though it's not something I'd ever recommend from a security POV, if you can get ZoneMinder's process that looks at the camera input running as superuser, it probably will work.

I wish I had more experience with the local cameras, but I just don't. Like I said though, probably has to do with permissions ;) Good luck!

Cheers,
Brian

Hi,
nice post, handled a lot of the setup questions i had.

I still have a small problem here with one of my webcams. I'm on linux and i can view the webcam on /dev/video0 with different programs (like cheese). When i add a monitor on /dev/video0 i however get no image inside zoneminder. the problem acutally seems to be that zoneminder can't start the cam, since the small light on the cam turns on when i use cheese, but doesn't turn on when only the zoneminder is running. Have you any experience with this?

Btw. it's an iSight cam.

Greetz and thx in advanve.

Yeah, if you're going to move them and plan on installing them permanently with some wood screws or mounting hardware, it'd make sense to wait.

There really isn't a ZoneMinder app per-se (although perhaps there's a market for one), just that mobile version of the page. To be totally honest, I haven't done much tinkering at all with it since just using IPVision is pretty much all I want for mobile monitoring.

That or iRa Pro ;)

Nice writeup - I'm looking at installing something similar although I think I'm going to end up waiting until I move over the summer so I don't have to end up installing the cameras in the correct positions more than once...

I'm kinda disappointed that the ZoneMinder iPhone app doesn't work all that well... that would've sold me on installing cameras right now
